Q: What size Benevon implementation team do you recommend, and what is the ideal team composition?
Michelle in Georgia
A: We recommend a team of seven people who commit to implementing the model for at least the next year. A seven-member team is ideal and we highly discourage teams of less than five.
It should include a combination of staff, board and volunteers (maximum of three staff total). An ideal team would consist of:
- Three staff: the executive director, development director, and one other staff member such as a development associate, marketing, finance, or program person
- Two or three board members including the board chair, board development/fundraising committee member, or other board members who have a real interest in fundraising and the long-term sustainability of the organization
- Two to three key volunteers: these may be program volunteers such as tutors, family members, former staff members, former board members, or fundraising volunteers who have worked on other events.
All team members should be passionate and committed to your organization’s mission. They must be people who want to be involved in the implementation of the model. Do not assume everyone on your development committee, for example, should be on the team. Also consider the office manager or others who have always seemed interested in fundraising and who may have a lot of contact with people.
Time commitment: 1-5 hours per person, per week for one year.
